Spring Skiing 2016
January 27th, 2016 in High Camp Happenings
With the wonderful winter season we have been enjoying, comes the promise of spring and spring skiing! It is the perfect time for back country skiing: corn snow, long days, moderate weather, sunshine…it could not be better!
The area that we love to ski when April rolls around is the High Meadows! The snow is still deep and with the long days we can get up there and spend time on the slopes practicing turns and trying different runs. The regular access to this area is to head to Lake Julius, climb to Loch Eileen and then climb up the ridge towards Lake Donald. We head up Yo-You Hill and enter the High Meadows with peak destinations of Baldy and Tamarack, McWaukum for the hardy. Any time you are able to do this trip is a memorable day.
As the avalanche danger stabilizes we are also able to access the High Meadows via McCue Ridge. You climb up to the ridge and head to High Point. Then just keep going along the ridgetop. It gets very narrow, so caution is advised. You enter the High Meadows above Lake Donald and can exit via Loch Eileen and Lake Julius making a loop trip. Nothing but fun!
Under particularly stable conditions you can head to the Larch Lake area. You go to the top of the ridge and drop down the long traverse to Lake Chiwaukum, then head up to Ewing basin and Larch Lake. This is an area that does not see many skiers during the winter. In spring it is safer and an awesome destination.
