A Start with Heart
July 30th, 2016 in High Camp Happenings
We kicked off our 2016 hiking season this week with a visit from GIVE. What a beautiful beginning! The Roots of Change is the motto of this organization. You can check them out at givevolunteers.org. This is a group that gives young people the skills to work internationally as a volunteer to make a difference globally. The group of young people that GIVE brought to Scottish Lakes this week came from Gold Star. This is an organization that supports children from military families who have lost a parent. About 20 people (high school age kids, interns working with GIVE, and GIVE leadership) spent six nights at Scottish Lakes.
Our Mission is to inspire growth, empower global citizens, and ignite sustainable change worldwide.
GIVE offers volunteer opportunities in Africa, South America and Asia. They also offer a Mountain Leadership Program. This aspect of GIVE called WILD – Wilderness & International Development is the training that was offered at Scottish Lakes this past week.
GIVE’s Wilderness & International Development (WILD) program is a groundbreaking course designed to provide you with all the skills, knowledge, confidence and certifications to become an International Wilderness Guide. The snow-capped peaks, forested valleys and alpine lakes of Washington’s Cascade Mountain Range will serve as your classroom, with an all encompassing curriculum covering: Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Risk Management, Outdoor Leadership and International Guiding.
The kids worked on hiking skills, safety, first aid, navigation, and appreciation and respect for the back country. Building confidence and equipping the students with the resources they need to make a difference throughout the world. The feeling tone was positive and caring. The students were receptive and excited. It was truly a “start from the heart” for our hiking season.
